Morgan, set to ‘pick up the pace’ with our help25.02.2010
A champion rower from Maidstone will find things a little easier after Gullands have agreed to sponsor him for three years.
Morgan Hellen, from Bower Mount Road, is a 17-year-old pupil from Oakwood Park Grammar School and a member of Maidstone Invicta Rowing Club.
Gullands’ Partner, Leroy Bradley, said: “We are delighted to be assisting a local lad who has a very realistic chance of becoming an Olympic oarsman. We have helped other local youngsters in their sporting endeavours in the past, and Morgan’s determination to get to the absolute top deserves encouragement. We hope he manages to secure other sponsorship as well.”
Morgan, who is the son of Gullands’ client, Paul Hellen, proprietor of Solo Hairdressing salon in Bank Street, Maidstone, approached Gullands pointing out the expenses he incurs trying to fulfil his ambitions in the sport.
“Last year my parents spent £3,000 just on events and accommodation, and that’s without travel costs, kit and my exceptionally large appetite!” he said.
Sporting activity runs in Morgan’s family. He has also represented Kent at rugby but it is in the world of rowing that he has shown so much promise. He has rowed for the Junior 18 GB team as a 16-year-old in the European Championships, and won three gold and one bronze international medals in 2009.
When he was just 15 he was selected a year early for the Junior 16 GB team and was national champion two years running in 2007/08 as well as National Schools Champion in the double scull (2008) and in the pair (2009).
Every time he has entered the British Indoor Rowing Championships, he has won a medal.
“I hope to represent Great Britain at the Junior World Championships in the Czech Republic in August and eventually to represent my country in the Olympics,” he said. “I am thrilled to receive sponsorship from Gullands.”
