Is World Cup fever distracting warring couples?
As World Cup fever grips the nation divorce solicitors in Maidstone are reporting a significant reduction in the number of new divorce instructions from clients since the start of the tournament two weeks ago, compared to the number they would typically receive over the same period.
“It seems that people may well be preoccupied with the football at the moment as there is nothing quite dominating people’s time and conversations in the same way.” says Melissa Markham of Gullands Solicitors in Maidstone.
Melissa continues: “I am however expecting to see a sharp increase in the number of instructions once the tournament is over – and not because of England’s performance. Those people in marriages already cracking under the strain of the credit crunch may decide to show their spouse the red card after having been sidelined by the football for the last four weeks. This really could be the last straw for some couples if they have already been experiencing difficulties in their marriage. Past experience of couples contacting the firm after the world cup has finished also supports this pattern.”
Melissa concludes: “Typically divorce lawyers also see an increase in the number of people contacting them in September and January when couples may have spent longer periods of time together – perhaps on holiday or at home and they sadly decide enough is enough.”
