Gullands' Joint Skills Solve Musa's Problem

Such had been the success of Mexican restaurant and cocktail bar,Tacos Locos, in Lower Stone Street, Maidstone, that owner, Musa Kivrak naturally wanted to extend the franchise to other locations.

With a fine track record of running successful catering enterprises, including in the past a Maidstone hotel and three fine dining restaurants in Maidstone and Lenham, Musa identified premises in St Peter's Street, Canterbury and asked Gullands' Partner, Paul Burbidge to handle the negotiations on the lease.

But things were far from plain sailing and there were complications surrounding the drinks licence with neighbouring properties objecting, fearing the plans were for a club with loud music.

That is when the combined forces of Paul Burbidge and fellow Partner, Leroy Bradley, stepped in to smooth the waters and to represent Musa at the licensing hearing.

"The negotiations on the lease went fine, but then the problem regarding the drinks licence reared its head, so it was time to call in Leroy," said Paul. "It was a classic example of how a multi-disciplined firm of lawyers can bring different skills to the problem and co-operate with the client to reach the pre-determined goal."

Leroy added: "Musa tried to handle the licence problem himself, but nearby residents objected. That is when I came in and after advising Musa we instructed a barrister for the hearing and secured the licence. He now has his second Tacos Locos restaurant and by all reports it is very successful."

Musa, whose 24 year old son, Omer, runs the Canterbury operation, said the new venue opened on 28th April and has been very successful.

"The council and our neighbours were worried that we were going to open a club on the site, but thanks to Paul and Leroy we were able to convince them that all we wanted to do was to have a Mexican restaurant."

"I have been running Tacos Locos in Maidstone for three years now and we have never had an incident in all that time. We are experienced in running restaurants.

"I have been using Gullands for many years and want to thank Paul and Leroy for their tremendous support and advice. Leroy instructed a barrister to represent me and I was so pleased when he turned up himself to support me. They were all very kind," said Musa.
